From the start i wondered: if she doesn’t speak, how would they learn her name? Originally I think I had them looking for her name written on the tag of her shirt, with obvious brief errors in judgement: “It looks like her name is ‘Fruit of the Loom’ .”

I always wondered: Was it that Dee DOESN’T speak or COULDN’T speak?
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the joke about ‘Fruit of the Loom’ done before, almost verbatim. But I forget where.
@Ethan: Maybe you’re thinking of Back to the Future.
“How are you doing Mr. Klein?”
“Why are you calling me Mr. Klein?”
“It’s your name, isn’t it? Calvin Klein? It’s all over your clothes.”
@Ken: Once when Chris was short on time (he was moving if I remember correctly), he did a week where Dee talked, saying she was “helping him with the chores” (can’t find the link, though). So I think that pretty much rules out the “can’t speak” theory.
@ Frank:
But that’s not canon.
Really, it just shows that the actor can speak, not that the character can speak. It’s amazing how ready people are to identify cartoon characters with the actors who portray them.
Compare the character Madge, who is played by an actor named Alexandria. Obviously not the same person at all, see?
Homer Simpson Is not real, he is just an actor.
@Ken – She knows words and makes sounds but doesn’t talk so “doesn’t” is more sensical.
But considering that all the animals in the strip talk, what does it matter?
